BYU softball lost to Utah, 9-0, in five innings at Dumke Stadium on Friday night, April 24.
The game ended early due to the run-rule after Utah scored six runs in the fourth inning. The Cougars now hold a record of 17-30 overall and 6-14 in Big 12 play.
BYU struggled with control on the mound, issuing seven walks and hitting one batter while allowing eight hits. Utah took an early lead by loading the bases with two walks and a single before scoring two runs on additional walks. BYU’s Jada Villegas came on in relief during the first inning and helped limit further damage in the second by getting a runner out at home and recording a strikeout.
Utah extended its lead with another run in the third after a walk and double. In the fourth inning, they added six more runs from five hits, one walk, and another hit batter. Offensively for BYU, Lily Owens went two-for-two at the plate. Bre Townsend led off the fifth with a single but her pinch runner was doubled off before BYU grounded out to end the game.
The series finale between BYU and Utah is scheduled for Saturday, April 25 at 5 p.m. Mountain Time on ESPN+.
