The BYU Cougars men’s track and field team saw five athletes reach the podium and two more advance to event finals on May 15 during the second day of the Big 12 Championships at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.
The results highlight a strong showing for BYU as they finished the day in sixth place overall with a total of 32 points. The performance is significant as it demonstrates depth across multiple events heading into the final day of competition.
Mark Bryant and Tyler Poole secured fourth and sixth place finishes respectively in the shot put, contributing eight points to the team’s total. Bryant achieved a personal best mark of 17.71 meters while Poole recorded a throw of 17.54 meters. In distance events, Garrett Stanford and Jefferson McMullin placed fifth and sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with times of 8:43.42 and 8:43.97, followed by Max Davis who finished eighth at 8:47.26.
Carter Cutting advanced to his second final after winning his heat in the men’s 800-meter prelims with a time of 1:47.97, which was seventh fastest among all competitors. He had previously qualified for the finals in the men’s 1500-meter event as well. Garrett Copelin also moved forward to compete in Saturday’s final for the men’s 110-meter hurdles after posting a time of 13.97 seconds for ninth overall in preliminaries.
Other notable performances included Kaden Passey finishing ninth overall in decathlon with a score of 7356 points, Brayden Packard placing nineteenth in his heat for the men’s 800 meters (1:50.50), while multi-event athletes Ben Barton and Jayden Jessee competed both in long jump (21st and19th) and hurdles (11th and15th). Additional top-20 finishes came from Josh Taylor (17th, men’s400m), Dallin Thornton (12th) and Silas Zimmerman (13th) both clearing heights of4 .93m/16-2in pole vault.
The championships conclude on Saturday, May16 , where remaining finals will take place including those featuring Cuttingand Copelin . Streaming coverage will be available via ESPN+.
