Interstate 15 in Weber County will be fully closed in both directions this weekend as crews work to demolish the 4400 South bridge in Riverdale. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has announced that the closure will begin at 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, and last until 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 24.
During the closure, drivers are advised to use Interstate 84 ramps and Riverdale Road detour routes. Those traveling to Ogden Airport should use 31st Street for access.
“This work is part of a project to replace three bridges in Riverdale. The bridges were built in the 1960s and have been carefully maintained for more than 50 years. However, maintenance can only extend a bridge’s life so far. Replacing them now will provide safe, long-lasting connections that meet today’s traffic demands,” UDOT stated.
The replacement project includes both traditional construction methods for the new 4400 South bridge and accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology for other I-84 ramp bridges involved in the project. According to UDOT, ABC allows for faster completion and higher-quality results compared to conventional techniques. The overall project was initially expected to finish by late 2026 but is now estimated to be completed by summer of that year due to the use of ABC technology.
“While traditional methods will be used to build the 4400 South bridge, UDOT will be using accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology for the other I-84 ramp bridges in this project. ABC is a safe and efficient process, as it results in better-quality bridges and an accelerated schedule. The project was originally expected to wrap up in late 2026, but with ABC’s accelerated schedule, the project is now estimated to wrap up in summer of 2026,” according to UDOT.
UDOT emphasized that all construction schedules depend on weather conditions and may change if necessary.
