The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has announced the closure of several major interstate ramps in Salt Lake and Davis County this weekend due to construction work. The closures are part of ongoing efforts to improve road conditions through repaving and lane striping.

Starting on Saturday, June 21, at 10 p.m., the Interstate 215 eastbound ramp leading to southbound Interstate 15 will be closed until Monday, June 23, at 5 a.m. This closure is necessary for crews to repave the freeway. Concurrently, the 7200 South on-ramp to I-15 southbound will also be closed. During these times, traffic will be redirected north on I-15 and instructed to turn around at the 5300 South exit while concrete repairs are underway.

Further north, on Saturday from 11 p.m. to Sunday at 8 a.m., the southbound Interstate 215 ramp between Legacy Parkway and Interstate 15 will close for new lane striping installation. Traffic during this period will be rerouted to 500 South.

On Sunday night, from June 22 at 11 p.m. until Monday morning at 6 a.m., lane striping work will necessitate closing the northbound I-215 ramp between Legacy Parkway and I-15. Drivers will be detoured via Interstate 80.

This construction is part of UDOT’s Enhanced Freeway Striping project, described as “the largest restriping project in state history.” The project aims to replace existing lane markings with new wider lines that enhance visibility and reflectivity—an initiative beneficial for both human drivers and autonomous vehicle technology.

“The contrast is helpful for autonomous vehicle sensors and cameras,” according to UDOT’s statement about the project’s features.

The new striping involves retroreflective tape placed in pavement grooves for improved durability and better performance under nighttime or wet conditions.

UDOT advises that construction schedules may change depending on weather conditions.
