A man suffered life-threatening injuries after a car struck five pedestrians in Market Place, Arnold, early Saturday morning, according to a May 9 statement from Nottinghamshire Police. The incident occurred at about 1:10 BST and followed an argument in the town centre.

Police said the driver of the red Vauxhall Astra, described as a white man, abandoned the vehicle and left the scene. Authorities confirmed that counter terrorism officers were not involved and stated there was “no indication” of any ongoing threat to the wider public.

A police cordon was set up at Market Place and surrounding junctions for most of Saturday before being lifted in the evening as investigations continued. Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow addressed community concerns by saying, “This was a serious incident which will have caused concern in the community.” She added, “We believe an argument has taken place in Arnold town centre and this has resulted in a car being driven at a group of people. We know five people were injured but we’d still like to hear from anyone else involved. Any witnesses who were in Arnold Market Place, or the wider town centre area around this time, should also get in touch.”

Michael Payne, Member of Parliament for Gedling, visited the scene alongside Gedling Borough Council leader John Clarke. Payne said: “We’re a tight-knit community in Arnold. This has been my home my entire life. I live in Arnold and we’ll respond in the usual way as a community and will support the police in the important work they’re doing.” He also extended his wishes to those affected: “My best wishes go to the individuals who’ve been hurt in the incident and I seriously hope that the said individual who’s got life-threatening injuries makes a recovery. My thoughts are with them and their family.”

Clarke discussed potential safety improvements for Market Place following recent calls for increased protection along local roads: “There need to be barriers, there needs to be prevention, and we need to look at it seriously to make people feel safe, to make businesses stay here so they’ll prosper,” he said.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities appeal for additional witnesses or information related to this incident.
