Southern Utah University’s softball team secured a 5-3 win against Abilene Christian on April 18, completing a series sweep and improving their season record to 19-23, with a 5-7 mark in Western Athletic Conference play.
The outcome is significant as it boosts the Thunderbirds’ standing in conference competition and provides momentum heading into upcoming games. The team collected ten hits during the game, led by Arianna Ramirez who went three-for-three at the plate and drove in two runs. McKenzy Becerra, Kassidy Munoz, and Michaella Salvatierra each contributed two hits, with Becerra also hitting an RBI double.
Pitcher Hannah Duncan started for Southern Utah and earned the win after four innings of work, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three batters. Senior Delaney Baker provided relief pitching for just over two innings, giving up one earned run on three hits. Freshman Avery Nielson came in to close out the game and recorded a save along with a strikeout.
The Thunderbirds established an early lead in the first inning following key plays from Taralyn Ollison, Salvatierra, Becerra, Ramirez, and Munoz. Abilene Christian responded with runs in the third and fifth innings but Southern Utah maintained control through timely hitting and defense. A late triple by Ollison followed by Salvatierra’s single added insurance before Nielson was brought in to secure the final outs after back-to-back Wildcat hits.
Looking ahead, Southern Utah will continue conference play on the road against UT Arlington starting April 24. The teams are scheduled for a Friday doubleheader at noon Mountain Time followed by another game Saturday morning. Fans can follow live statistics via suutbirds.com or watch broadcasts on ESPN+.
