The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to the 2nd Annual Cardboard Regatta Saturday, July 23rd at 4:00 pm at Redmond Lake.
The Rules to participate are as follows:
GENERAL RULES
Cost is $10 per person, per race for the Adult and Family categories; $5 per person, per race for the Youth category.
Boats must be pre-built but can be “fine-tuned” on site.
All boats are human-powered. Oars and paddles are allowed.
Minimum of 2 crew members…every crew member must wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Please bring your own PFD. Arms and legs in the boat at all times.
Everyone must have a clear exit from the vessel. Race must begin and end with the crew intact.
CATEGORIES
a. Youth & Teen (ages 10-17/at least one person in the boat must be 10-17)
b. Adult (Ages 18+)
c. Family (Adult/youth combo)
BOAT CONSTRUCTION
All boats must be built of corrugated cardboard. There can be no motors! No metal screws can hold the boat together. (If there is any doubt about the construction, the judges reserve the right to use a probe to test and verify that only cardboard has been used.)
The only fastening materials you can use are tape and glue. Duct tape may be used for seams, but you cannot wrap the boat with duct tape or plastic.
Wood, metal, Styrofoam, or other material that would aid in flotation or make the hull rigid are prohibited.
Hulls may be painted with any “one-part” enamel paint or lacquer paint. Polyurethane varnish or water sealant is not permitted.
Boats should be less than 5 feet wide and less than 8 feet long.
Everything must be environment-friendly (example: no glitter, tinsel, etc.). Boats, boat parts, and debris must be disposed of by the team after the event.
Note: Boats are subject to inspection and disqualification for each violation of the above general rules. Rules are subject to change. The Judges’ decision shall be final.
AWARDS
Awards will be given to the fastest times in each event category:
1st Place – 2nd Place – 3rd Place
Special awards will be given to the following: Most Creative Award – Best Decorated Award – Titanic Award (best spectacular sinking)
