Amazon received $10 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Utah communities for three projects.
Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Utah provided the 31st-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.
Utah is ranked behind Oklahoma (5 projects/$11 million) and ahead of Delaware (2 projects/$8 million), Minnesota (1 project/$6 million), and New Mexico (1 project/$5 million).
The two largest subsidies provided in Utah were from the Salt Lake City government, equaling $8 million in tax increment financing.
There were no developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.
Utah has shifted from providing cash grants to companies and industries to instead offering tax breaks and credits, which are less easy to track and account for.
Utah is one of only four states in the U.S. that does not issue tax expenditure reports.
As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
