The Southern Utah Thunderbirds reported on Apr. 18 that their track and field teams secured several event wins at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California, with notable performances in both men’s and women’s competitions.
The meet is significant for the Thunderbirds as it helps build momentum ahead of the postseason, showcasing depth across sprints, hurdles, jumps, and distance events.
On the men’s side, Isley Gutierrez placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.17 seconds and also competed in the 100-meter preliminaries. Tyler Myrup ran a time of 14.46 seconds in the hurdles as well. Ashton Miller led Southern Utah in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.11 seconds, while Matthew Hayes and Jared Sharp followed closely behind. In field events, Divin Kalanga recorded a long jump mark of 7.17 meters (23’6¼”), with Ace Brown contributing both on the track and field by running strong times in multiple sprint events.
For distance races, Amit Cohen finished the men’s 10,000 meters in just over thirty minutes while Logan Peel led his team with a competitive result in the men’s 5,000 meters.
The women’s team was highlighted by Audrey Hales winning the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:10.57. Kimberly Winward added to this performance by finishing her own heat at an even faster pace before competing successfully again later that day. Freshman Riley Gough captured first place in high jump clearing a height of 1.63 meters (5’4¼”). Other standout results included top-10 finishes from Chloe Bingham and solid efforts from sprinters such as Sabrina Wright and Iana-Michovani Graham.
As postseason competition approaches for Southern Utah’s track & field program, these results at one of California’s major collegiate meets indicate continued progress for both squads.
