Drivers on Bangerter Highway will begin using new pavement under the 13400 South interchange starting July 31, as part of the Utah Department of Transportation’s (UDOT) project to convert the highway into a freeway-like corridor. The transition marks a significant milestone for the Riverton interchange, one of four interchanges currently being built to improve safety and traffic flow.

The lane shift will occur in phases, with all lanes expected to be moved onto the new alignment by August 4. During this time, left turns at 13400 South from Bangerter Highway will not be allowed from Friday night until Monday at 5 a.m. Drivers are advised to follow posted signs and plan for possible delays during the change.

“Driving under the bridge is a big sign that this project is moving forward,” UDOT Region 2 Director Robert Stewart said. “It’s always exciting when people can start using parts of the new infrastructure — it makes the progress feel real.”

A temporary stoplight will remain for drivers turning left from northbound Bangerter Highway onto westbound 13400 South until east and westbound travel reopens in October.

Construction also continues on another major interchange at 2700 West in Bluffdale, where crews are scheduled to pour the bridge deck on July 31.

Once work is finished at interchanges on 4700 South, 9800 South, 13400 South, and 2700 West, Bangerter Highway will allow uninterrupted travel without stoplights between I-15 and 4100 South. These improvements are designed to benefit over 60,000 vehicles that use Bangerter Highway each day by improving safety and reducing congestion throughout Salt Lake Valley’s west side.
