The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has completed four new interchanges on Bangerter Highway, located at 4700 South, 9800 South, 13400 South, and 2700 West. The completion was marked by a celebration attended by local leaders and students.
These upgrades are part of UDOT’s ongoing plan to eliminate stoplights along Bangerter Highway and transform it into a freeway-like corridor. Construction began in the summer of 2023. According to UDOT traffic engineers, the changes are expected to reduce travel times for drivers by eight minutes.
“Bangerter Highway plays a vital role on the west side, and these upgrades are part of a long-term vision to make travel safer and more predictable for everyone,” said Robert Stewart, UDOT Region Two Director. “Seeing students use the new pedestrian bridge and learn about how these interchanges work is a powerful reminder of why we do this work and who it benefits.”
With the recent improvements, Bangerter Highway now operates without stoplights from Interstate 15 in Draper to 4100 South in Taylorsville. More than 60,000 vehicles use this route daily. UDOT states that these changes will enhance safety and reliability for those traveling across the west side of Salt Lake Valley.
As part of the event, students from Elk Meadows Elementary and Elk Ridge Middle School participated in educational activities related to construction and used the new pedestrian bridge at 9800 South. This bridge provides them with a safer way to get to school.
UDOT also collected canned goods during the event for donation to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
