Utah Baseball defeated Texas Tech 12–2 on Apr. 18, securing a series win in a seven-inning game at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
The victory was marked by a strong offensive showing from the Utes, who recorded 15 hits and ended the contest early under the 10-run rule. The team broke open the game with a seven-run fourth inning and continued to add runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
The day also featured a celebration for Utah’s 2016 team, which returned to campus for the 10-year anniversary of its Pac-12 Championship. Nearly every member of that squad attended, many touring America First Ballpark for the first time.
Jake Long led Utah’s offense with a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run and three RBIs. Matt Flaharty hit his first home run of the season as part of his three-RBI performance, while Luke Jacobs contributed two RBIs with both a double and triple. Eight different Utah players had hits and eight scored at least one run; every player reached base safely.
On the mound, Payton Riske pitched over four innings allowing just one run and striking out two batters. Dylan Gazaway finished out the game with nearly three innings of relief work, striking out three while allowing only one run.
Utah will look to complete a sweep against Texas Tech in Sunday’s series finale scheduled for 1 p.m. Mountain Time at America First Ballpark.
