The University of Utah baseball team lost 10-3 to Baylor in the second game of their series on May 15 at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
This loss evens the series between the two teams. The result is significant as it sets up a deciding match for the final regular season game. Jake Long led Utah offensively, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Matt Flaharty contributed with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double and a two-run single late in the game. Cal Miller drew a walk that extended his on-base streak to 26 consecutive games, which is noted as the longest by a Utah freshman since at least 2002.
Defensively, Flaharty and Cameron Gurney made several notable plays throughout the night. Baylor took an early lead by scoring one run in each of the first two innings. In the third inning, Jet Gilliam prevented what looked like a home run from Baylor’s Brady Janusek with a leaping catch that held Janusek to a triple instead.
Utah scored its first run in the fourth inning after singles from Long and Daniel Arambula set up Long’s run following a double play. However, Baylor responded by scoring eight unanswered runs over four innings. Despite having opportunities with runners in scoring position, Utah finished just one for twelve in those situations.
The Utes rallied for two runs in the eighth inning after walks loaded the bases and Flaharty drove home Gurney and Miller with a single before Baylor ended their rally with an outfield fly ball.
Utah will conclude its regular season against Baylor tomorrow afternoon at America First Ballpark.
