The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will begin reconstruction of the University Avenue bridge in Provo on October 1. The project aims to replace the current structure with a modern bridge designed to improve safety and accessibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
According to UDOT Project Manager Andy Spencer, “This bridge is a vital connection for both Provo residents and regional travelers. Because of how crucial this road is, the new design will focus on enhancing safety and mobility while creating a more comfortable experience for everyone who uses it.”
The new bridge will feature two lanes in each direction to support steady traffic flow. Dedicated six-foot bike lanes will be added in both directions to increase cyclist safety. Sidewalks on each side will be widened to eight feet for pedestrians. A 12-foot multi-use trail on the west side will connect 500 South and 600 South, improving community access. Additional improvements include better sight lines for drivers and a 10-foot-tall protective fence over the railroad tracks.
Initial construction activity begins October 1 with crews preparing for demolition; however, there will be no immediate impact on traffic until late October when demolition of the west side starts.
The construction is planned in two phases over two years. Work on the west side begins this fall and continues through next fall. Afterward, crews will shift operations to the east side, with completion expected by fall 2027.
During construction, UDOT plans to keep one lane open in each direction during daytime hours to help maintain traffic flow.
Construction timelines may change depending on weather conditions.
