Drivers in Parleys Canyon are being advised by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to anticipate overnight delays and closures due to ongoing work to apply new reflective stripes on state roads.

According to UDOT, from 11 p.m. Monday, September 8 until 4 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, eastbound I-80 will be closed where it splits left toward Parleys Canyon and Cheyenne. During this time, drivers heading east will be detoured onto southbound Interstate 215 and then to 3300 South before rejoining eastbound I-80.

That same night, striping crews will also be active farther up the canyon near Mountain Dell Golf Course extending just before Kimball Junction. I-80 will be reduced to one lane in these areas. In addition, another section of I-80 near Kimball Junction through the I-80 and US-40 (Exit 146) interchange will see lane reductions as rumble strips are installed.

On Tuesday night into Wednesday morning—September 9 at 11 p.m. through September 10 at 4 a.m.—westbound I-80 will close at Exit 130 through 2600 East for further lane striping work. Westbound drivers will be rerouted onto southbound I-215 and then back via 3300 South; traffic signal timing at that intersection will be adjusted to help drivers return efficiently to westbound I-80.

The closures are intended for crews to install “tiger tail” or contrast striping, which involves a white line followed by a black line between lanes. UDOT notes that this type of marking is not only more visible but also aids sensors and cameras used by autonomous vehicles.

“Tiger tail” or contrast striping offers increased visibility for both human drivers and automated vehicle technology, according to transportation officials.
