Utah Valley University ended day two of the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in first place on both the men’s and women’s sides, according to a May 15 announcement. Grace Degarimore and Caren Kipsirat each won gold medals in the shot put and steeplechase events.

The results put Utah Valley’s men at 54 points with 15 events remaining, ahead of UT Arlington (39) and Southern Utah University (38). The women’s team holds a stronger lead with 99 points, leading second-place UT Arlington by 22 points as they enter the final day of competition.

Kipsirat led from start to finish in the steeplechase, finishing just one second shy of her school record with a time of 10:16.14. Kaitelyn Emmons also reached the podium in this event, placing third at 10:52.53. In field events, Degarimore overcame early fouls to secure first place in shot put on her third throw with a mark of 14.56 meters.

Other medalists for Utah Valley included Cole Johnson (decathlon silver), Cameron Jacobs (steeplechase silver), Eddie Garcia (shot put bronze), and Emmons (steeplechase bronze). Johnson earned his first career medal for UVU by scoring highest in all throwing events within the decathlon.

Gavin Stafford ran a meet-best qualifying time of 10.15 seconds in the men’s 100-meter dash under legal wind conditions, ranking him second all-time at UVU behind Gabe Remy’s previous season best. Additional program top-10 performances came from Cale Stinebaugh in shot put and Makaylie Roberds in hurdles.

The championships will conclude tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m., starting with women’s discus; live coverage is scheduled on ESPN+ from 3 p.m.
