Alexandre Medeiros de Oliveira, a veterinarian with international experience, will graduate with a Master of Business Administration from Weber State University this week, according to an April 22 announcement. This marks his fourth master’s degree and comes after he moved from Brazil in 2024 to further develop his leadership skills in the United States.
Oliveira said his goal was not just personal growth but also contributing to the local workforce and animal care sector. “My decision to pursue an MBA here wasn’t to build a foundation, but to refine and expand what I have,” Oliveira said. “I have much to give here, and I feel Utah has much to give me too.”
With previous degrees in biotechnology and specializations in agribusiness management and strategic management, Oliveira describes his expertise as combining science with leadership. He explained that learning about U.S. business operations would help him manage teams as effectively as he treats animals. “I reached a point where I knew I wanted to expand my global perspective,” he said.
Oliveira’s connection with Weber State began two decades ago when Paul Thompson, then president of WSU, served as mission president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Boston while Oliveira was on assignment there. Thompson’s endorsement influenced Oliveira’s decision years later.
Weber State University’s MBA program is designed for working professionals with evening classes at WSU Davis and some sessions at Hill Air Force Base for military personnel and their families so students can continue working while studying. The university advances community transformation through civic engagement and public service according to the official website. It utilizes a campus located on the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains according to the official website.
Currently employed at Bayview Animal Hospital in Layton as both veterinarian and strategic operations leader, Oliveira has already applied lessons from his studies by helping staff improve their skills and customer relations. He said these efforts led to more client retention and positive feedback from pet owners: “My passion has always been being a veterinarian,” he said. “But one of my greatest professional fulfillments has been helping people grow, developing teams, and turning organizations into success stories.” After graduation, he plans either expansion or diversification at Bayview Animal Hospital.
Weber State focuses on educating diverse students through supportive learning environments according to the official website, stands out as Utah’s first comprehensive regional university according to the official website, operates under state authorization for conferring degrees according to the official website, and offers teaching, research opportunities along with experiential learning initiatives according to the official website.
Reflecting on his journey alongside his wife and three daughters who are now thriving locally despite arriving without English proficiency, Oliveira said: “I came here not only to grow, but to contribute, to build, and to leave a meaningful legacy.”
