Victoria Beckham said on April 16 that she and her husband, Sir David Beckham, have “always tried to be the best parents that we can be,” in her first public comments following their eldest son Brooklyn’s recent statements about a rift within the family.

The topic has drawn attention because Brooklyn Peltz Beckham posted a detailed message on Instagram in January. In his post, he accused his parents of attempting to “ruin” his relationship with wife Nicola and suggested that expressions of love in the family were tied to promoting “Brand Beckham.” Victoria Beckham responded during an interview with the Wall Street Journal, saying: “I think that we’ve always – we love our children so much. We’ve always tried to be the best parents that we can be. And you know, we’ve been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we’ve ever tried to do is protect our children and love our children.”

Although Lady Beckham wished Brooklyn a happy birthday on social media last month, this interview was her first direct response addressing the situation publicly. In his six-page Instagram statement from January, Brooklyn described how relations with his parents had broken down and said he felt compelled to speak out because they had “continued to go to the press.” He also claimed that Victoria cancelled making Nicola’s wedding dress at short notice and behaved awkwardly during their wedding ceremony.

Brooklyn further alleged that family values centered around public promotion and endorsements rather than personal relationships. He wrote: “family ‘love’ is decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo opp.”

Some guests who attended the wedding have given different accounts of what happened. DJ Fat Tony supported Brooklyn’s version regarding an uncomfortable dance between him and his mother at the event; however, singer Marc Anthony disputed these descriptions as being inaccurate.

Sir David has not made any direct comment about these claims but spoke generally about social media at a panel discussion in Davos soon after Brooklyn’s statement was released. He said children are “allowed to make mistakes.”
