Weber State University’s softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against the visiting Montana Lady Griz on Apr. 17 in Ogden.
The results impact the Wildcats as they approach their final home game and senior celebrations, highlighting the importance of each contest in their season.
In the first game, Montana took an early lead with a fourth-inning home run by Mejia and expanded it through additional runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Weber State responded late, with Sadie Kirk doubling to drive in Abby Grundy, followed by Emma Bingham’s single that brought Kirk home. Despite these efforts, Weber State was unable to overcome the deficit and lost 4-2. Grundy led with two hits for the Wildcats while Cali McCraw pitched a complete game, recording two strikeouts.
During game two, Weber State started strong as Kirk’s sacrifice fly scored Jordan McMahon in the first inning. Bingham hit a three-run homer in the third inning to give her team a four-run lead. The Wildcats extended their advantage to 6-0 before Montana mounted a comeback starting in the fourth inning. Key moments included Gutierrez’s two-run homer for Montana and Christiaens’ three-run shot that gave them their first lead late in the seventh inning. Additional back-to-back homers by Tarrant and Cherms sealed an 11-6 win for Montana. Kendall Freidinger pitched over six innings but was charged with ten earned runs; Raina Navarro finished out relief duties.
The Wildcats will play their final home game against Montana on Saturday, which will include senior celebrations after the contest and a ceremony renaming Wildcat Softball Field to Mary Kay Amicone Field at Miller Park before play begins at 11 a.m.
