A woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car struck pedestrians in central London early Sunday morning, leaving one woman in critical condition and a man with life-changing injuries.
The Metropolitan Police said the incident occurred on Argyll Street at about 4:30 BST. Emergency services responded to the scene where a 30-year-old woman was taken to hospital in critical condition. A man in his 50s also sustained life-changing injuries and was transported for medical care.
Police reported that the driver, a 29-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving, and drink driving. Authorities stated that they are not treating the incident as terrorism-related.
A third victim, a woman in her 30s, received treatment for minor injuries. Video footage shared by witnesses on social media appeared to show an altercation between several women before one entered a car that then moved forward and hit another woman standing on the pavement. A man nearby with a bicycle also seemed to have been struck by the vehicle.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell called for witnesses to come forward as investigations continue. “As our enquiries continue, our thoughts are with those injured and their loved ones,” Foxwell said. “While this incident took place in the early hours of the morning, venues in the area were still open, and we believe a number of people will have seen what happened.” She added: “I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or any activity prior to it that they feel may be of relevance, to come forward.” Foxwell emphasized: “The information you have – however minor you believe it may be – could be of crucial importance to investigators.”
Police are continuing their investigation into all circumstances surrounding this event.
