NFIB Utah's Leadership Council held a virtual meeting on October 4, where members engaged with key state lawmakers. The discussion featured Senate Majority Leader Evan Vickers, Senate Assistant Majority Whip Kirk Cullimore, and Cory Maloy, chair of the House Business and Labor Committee.

Cullimore began the session by commending NFIB's role in legislative processes. "I appreciate everything you guys do, not only as small business owners but participating in the association because this is actually critical for the legislative process to have your voice heard at the State Capitol," he said. He emphasized that small businesses are vital to Utah's economy.

Vickers shared similar sentiments about NFIB's focus on small business issues. "One of the things I thought about NFIB is I don’t see it trailing after things outside our box … they’re always working on issues specifically for small business, which I’ve always appreciated," he noted. Vickers also advised business owners to stay politically informed to avoid unforeseen challenges.

During the meeting, NFIB Utah State Director Casey Hill asked what topics might arise in the 2024 legislative session. The lawmakers identified energy, homelessness, and mental and behavioral health as key areas of focus.

Council members raised various issues with legislators including income tax cuts, non-compete agreements, sales tax elimination, business personal property tax concerns, and matters related to credit cards and banking.

NFIB expressed gratitude to both its members and the legislators for their participation in this informative meeting.
