Commissioner Craig W. Buttars of the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) has announced his retirement, concluding four years of service to the State of Utah.
"I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve as the Commissioner of the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food," said Buttars. "My love for agriculture and Utah’s farmers and ranchers has only grown stronger as I have served my time in this role. I hope they feel that I have represented them well and have helped make a positive impact for agriculture and the State of Utah."
Appointed by Governor Spencer Cox in January 2021, Buttars has led UDAF with a focus on innovation. Under his leadership, the department made progress in efficiency, policy development, and program expansion to better support Utah's agricultural community.
During his tenure, Buttars initiated several key programs:
- The creation of the Utah Food Security Processing Grant aimed at strengthening local food systems.
- Expansion of the Agricultural Water Optimization Program to improve irrigation efficiency.
- Enhancements to the Utah Medical Cannabis Program.
- Improvements in internal operations that saved taxpayer dollars.
- Advocacy for farmers, ranchers, and food businesses in policy discussions on issues like Great Salt Lake strategies and public land management.
Buttars' retirement marks an end to a notable career in public service. Before joining UDAF, he served as Cache County Executive, was part of the Cache County Council, and represented Utah House District 3. His dedication to Utah's communities and agricultural sector has been consistent throughout his career.
Commissioner Buttars will remain in his position until the end of the 2025 Utah Legislative Session. Governor Cox will appoint a new commissioner thereafter.
