The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has announced plans for a significant construction season, unveiling details for 152 new projects this year. Valued at $1.68 billion, these projects will supplement 145 ongoing construction initiatives.
According to UDOT, the planned improvements will range from new interchanges and bridges to infrastructure enhancements such as extended transit routes and trail developments. Lisa Wilson, UDOT Deputy Director, stated, “Every day, Utahns are out driving to work, picking up kids, heading to the mountains or just getting where they need to go. Our job is to make sure those trips are as safe and smooth as possible. These projects might cause some short-term delays, but in the long run, they’ll mean better roads, less congestion and a safer and more reliable way to get around — no matter how you travel.”
Major projects slated for this summer include the construction of a new interchange at the intersection of 1800 North and I-15 in Davis County, widening of I-84 bridges in Morgan County, and repaving efforts on I-215 in Salt Lake County. Each carries multi-million dollar budgets and extensive timescales, with some expected to complete by the end of the decade.
UDOT emphasizes safety and advises drivers to prepare for delays and shifting traffic patterns. Notably, the 1800 North and I-15 project in Davis County carries a $385 million price tag. Work doubled the width of multiple highways as part of its emphasis on long-term infrastructural improvements.
In response to increasing demands, current projects plan for enhanced capacity and efficiency across Utah's roadways. For example, the US-189 widening project in Wasatch County will add lanes and a signalized intersection, with anticipated completion by late winter 2026. Infrastructure safety enhancements such as wildlife protection measures and drainage improvements will also be included.
Ongoing construction includes several significant ventures. The 5600 South improvement in Weber County and the Bangerter Highway Interchange in Salt Lake County continue to progress with anticipated completions in the next few years. Additional projects aim to increase accessibility and connectivity, such as the all-electric Midvalley Express bus route in Salt Lake County.
UDOT reminds drivers that all construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to potential schedule changes. For updates on traffic restrictions, UDOT encourages the use of their official website and mobile applications for real-time information.
