The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is working to enhance pedestrian safety at intersections across the state by installing new lighting systems. These systems, known as under-mast lights, have been innovatively designed by UDOT engineers to provide lighting in areas unsuitable for traditional setups. They target specific zones where individuals might be walking or jogging, creating a spotlight effect.

To date, approximately 150 under-mast lights have been deployed throughout Utah, with recent installations occurring in Ogden and St. George. UDOT has plans to continue adding these lights statewide in the near future.

"Crosswalk users can often see a car before the car sees them, especially at night," UDOT Traffic Signal Supervisor David Townsend explained. "Under-mast lights immediately help a driver notice areas where they should be cautious. These lights will help crosswalk users and motorists be safer, exist harmoniously, and confidently navigate to their destinations."

The lights consist of LED units that connect to the bottom of existing signal arms. This eliminates the need for additional infrastructure and avoids issues with nearby overhead power lines.

The intent is to improve safety for pedestrians and other at-risk road users, addressing the concern highlighted by the average of 43 pedestrian fatalities recorded on Utah roads annually since 2019, and nine fatalities so far this year.

"Under-mast lights may seem like a small change, but everything we do, from the smallest light installation to the creation of big, brand-new bridges is focused on making our roads safer," Townsend stated. "Adaptations like this are really important."

UDOT prioritizes installation sites based on data gathered during the pandemic, including reports of pedestrian mishaps and poorly lit areas. Their aim is to enhance lighting at every state-owned signalized intersection within five years.
